Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the flu. Fortunately, most medical aids cover the cost of the flu vaccine, although some schemes only cover individuals who might be at high risk for complications. If you’re pregnant, you are considered high risk and therefore should be covered. Find out for sure from your pharmacist. Even if you aren’t covered, consider getting it. The jab only costs about R72 – definitely worth it. “In South Africa, the best time to get your flu vaccine is before the end of April, before the flu season sets in. The earlier the better, as it takes 10 to 12 days to build up your immunity,” says Waheed Abdurahman, a Clicks pharmacist. Even though that window has passed, you can still take the vaccine at any time during the winter season.
