LEAVE THEM ALONE!
You don’t need to do anything to prepare your nipples for breastfeeding. Stay well away from the old wives’ advice of “toughening” up your nipples by scrubbing them with a toothbrush or the like. You’re just going to damage the skin, and there’s a risk that lots of nipple stimulation can trigger early labour, which you want to avoid at all costs. You don’t need tough nipples for breastfeeding; you need supple ones. So also don’t use harsh soap. Choose gentle moisturising products. A nipple cream can’t do any damage. (It’s also good for the lips!) Some midwives say you can prepare your nipples by exposing them to sun for a couple of minutes a day, but it’s not necessary.
