Antenatal classes proved helpful to Ayanda and Milisuthando Kumalo. “I learnt about the importance of a birth plan,” Ayanda explains. “What really struck me was what to expect during birth. I didn’t realise I should expect to be cut or the baby could be suctioned out.”

The main thing her wife took away was understanding how she could physically help Ayanda. “Knowing what Ayanda was going through really helped our relationship – and really helped me to be there for her during birth,” Milisuthando says. “I had no idea how things could go wrong, and understanding how

I could support her proved so crucial on the day. One really important takeaway for me was knowing which professionals to call in! We ended up needing a lactation specialist, and I wouldn’t have known to call one so quickly if it weren’t for the classes.”
