During pregnancy you need at least 1 000mg of calcium a day to stay healthy. If you get less, the body will take care of your baby’s calcium needs first, leaving you with weakened bones and teeth. This is why cheese is good news during pregnancy. It’s a great source of calcium. Many varieties are perfectly safe to eat during pregnancy, in particular the hard cheeses, such as the ones used in these recipes.

Avoid the following though: soft, mould-ripened cheese such as brie, camembert and chevre; soft, blueveined cheese and any other cheese made from unpasteuri­sed milk. These all come with a listeria risk that you don’t want to expose yourself to, as it could harm your baby. If you really have to have soft cheese, make sure it is thoroughly cooked.

The recommende­d portion size is 30mg, roughly the size of a match box.
