Social butterfly
When little Zoe Lwandle Mangwane (2½ years old) strode into our studio, she simply lit up the place! We interviewed her (okay, actually her doting mom and dad) to find out more about our 2020 cover winner.
ZOE WALKED IN AND OWNED THE ROOM! WHERE DOES THE CONFIDENCE COME FROM?
Zoe has always been a wonderful, delightful and happy child. She lights up every room she walks into.
She never cried much and has always been independent. She is friendly and super extroverted – she gets that from her dad. She’s always willing to talk to anybody who gives her attention. She sings a lot, and we think she might become a singer when she grows up.
ZOE, TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
”My mom and dad are Buhle and Bongani Mangwane. I have five siblings whom I love a lot.
We’re from the south of Johannesburg. My mom works in human resources in one of South Africa’s large financial institutions, and my dad is a managing director of his own company. I don’t have any pets yet, but
I love dogs. My favourite people are my Aunty Poppy and my dad.”

Yes, we really just started the page (@zoemangwane_) for her to have a digital album, as social media on the internet is permanent, and anything you post now, you’ll be able to access 20 or more years from now. So, the page is there, so we can capture and post moments in her life and our life as a family for her to look back at.

ARE ANY “TERRIBLE TWO” MOMENTS PART OF YOUR LIFE?
No terrible twos! She has never even spent a night in mom and dad’s bed; she has always slept in her own cot from day one, even though she doesn’t like going to bed. She can be naughty but is actually just really intelligent and super inquisitive.
WHAT DOES SHE ENJOY DOING, WATCHING AND SAYING?
She likes being outside, singing, dancing and laughing. She prefers playing with friends to playing with toys. Her favourite things are meat, new clothes, the mirror and, of course, taking pictures. She spends most of her time now learning new words and repeating everything Mommy says. She likes going where there are lots of people around, as other people make her really happy. Her favourite song is Somebody Come and Play by Sesame Street. Zoe doesn’t like sweets and also isn’t a big fan of kisses and cuddles, except from Dad!
WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AND DREAMS FOR ZOE?
The most important thing to us is for her to be happy, always be respectful and kind to herself and others and go for everything she wants, and for her to know that we will always be here to guide and support her in everything she does.
