The Candide Solitary Bee Hotel provides solitary bees with a safe and secure place to live and breed. Solitary bees, of which there are approximately 1 300 species in South Africa, live alone, although often in close proximity to each other. At least 50 percent of local species breed in dry wood, hollow reeds, branches and logs, and many are unable to make the holes that they use for breeding. So sometimes they need a little assistance. The Candide Solitary Bee Hotel gives these creatures just that. A rectangular piece of wood with a number of different-sized holes bored into it, it mimics natural breeding nests and attracts solitary bees. They use the holes as a safe breeding place and, once they have laid their eggs, they store food for their youngsters, seal the entrance and leave. With the Candide Solitary Bee Hotel, the chances of survival for this very important pollinator are greatly increased. Follow #PolliNationSA. R240, from candide.co.za
