TO BEAT HEARTBURN
When the ring of muscle that separates the oesophagus from the stomach relaxes, food and harsh digestive juices are allowed back up from the stomach. This is called heartburn. The muscles relax as your pregnant body produces large amounts of the hormones progesterone and relaxin.
FOOD TIPS
■ Eat little and often, and avoid eating at bedtime.
■ Steer clear of dishes that trigger heartburn – such as spicy foods or citrus.
■ You can use antacids, but avoid sodium bicarbonate.
