WHY YOU SHOULDN’T EAT SOIL

-

The biggest concern with your hot chips craving is your waistline, but what about cravings that can put your health at risk? Registered dietitian Nicqui Grant discusses when cravings become a problem. Excessive consumption of foods that are loaded in sugar can lead to blood glucose regulatory problems – which, if not managed well, could result in gestational diabetes. Eating too much salt is also dangerous, as it can impact your water retention and ultimately lead to poor blood pressure control.

But the cravings that are a serious concern are the ones that include nonfood items such as laundry detergent, soap, coal, chalk, stones, cigarette ash, compost and soot. This type of craving is known as pica. The consumption of any of these items may be harmful to both Baby and Mom, as some substances contain toxic compounds. Other substances, like dirt, can cause intestinal obstruction. These kinds of cravings may be linked to serious medical conditions and may be life threatening. If you are experiencing cravings for non-food items, and the cravings become overwhelmingly strong, it is time to consult with your healthcare professional.
