BREASTFEEDING POSITIONS

-

Always sit comfortably when you’re going to feed – particularly when you’ve got perineal stitches or a healing caesar wound. When you feel more at ease, you can experiment with different feeding positions.

SITTING

Sit in a comfortable (preferably rocking) chair, with your feet flat on the ground or resting on a foot stool. Support your back and arms with pillows, and place a pillow on your lap to raise and support your baby if necessary. There is no need to support your breast unless it’s particularly full or heavy.

Now cradle your baby in the crook of your arm, hold her tummy to your body – and start feeding.

RUGBY HOLD

Sit up and tuck your baby under your arm (like a rugby ball), with her legs behind you and her mouth at your breast. You can support her body with a pillow or a special feeding cushion or ”doughnut” that’s doubled to make a half-circle. Now guide your nipple into her mouth.

LYING DOWN

Lie on your side in bed so that your lower breast is at the same height as your baby’s mouth. Support your head on a pillow, and feed your baby from the lower breast. This is a good position if you’ve had a caesarean, and it’s ideal when you need to take a nap with your baby.
