WHAT IS IVF?

It stands for in vitro fertilisation. Basically, an egg is fertilised, with sperm, but instead of inside the woman’s body, the process takes place outside, or

”in glass”, as those in the industry say.

The fertilised egg then undergoes a process of embryo culture for two to six days, and it is then implanted back into the woman’s uterus.

The cost for IVF varies, but can start anywhere from R40 000 per treatment cycle if there are no complications.
