NAPPIES

Start shopping fairly early on in your pregnancy. If in doubt, chat to other mothers about their brand of preference. Be on the lookout for advertised specials, and try to buy in bulk. You’ll go through a lot of nappies, but remember that cheapest is not always best. There’s no such thing as too many nappies, and it might be a good idea to ask your friends and relatives to buy you a few gift packs.

CLOTHING

Don’t bother with fancy outfits for newborns and prems. Most of the time, they’re going to be swaddled in blankets anyway. The most useful items are a few packs of babygro vests. Your babies can’t regulate their own body temperature at first, so they’ll also need little hats to keep their heads warm.

ACCESSORIES

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the riotous display of colourful, gleaming equipment in large baby shops, but you really only need a few basics: a pram, car seats and a place for your babies to sleep. Probably the best investment you can make is a good breastpump. Toys can wait. ●
