DIARRHOEA IN CHILDREN
Gastroenteritis (and the resulting diarrhoea) is a major reason for hospitalisation in children under
3 years old. It is caused by a number of different viruses, bacteria and parasites, the rotavirus and increasingly also by the norovirus.
Some children are especially at risk of diarrhoea: Children with immunodeficiency conditions, underlying chronic conditions, or children undergoing treatment may have a more severe and prolonged course of infection.
So, what can you do? While rehydration remains most important in the management of diarrhoea, selected probiotics may reduce the duration and intensity of symptoms and can be used in addition to rehydration solutions. When choosing a probiotic for the treatment of specific conditions, look out for one that has proven effectiveness in that condition and within the age range of your child.
Current evidence shows that probiotic effects are ”strain-specific”, so speak to your doctor or pharmacist to help you choose the right one, and to ensure that the benefits are validated. ●
