“Whether you breastfeed or formula feed, all mothers need to eat a healthy and balanced diet,” says nutritioni­st Desi Horsman. Eat small, regular nutritious meals and drink lots of water (a glass with every feed to prevent dehydratio­n and provide adequate supply).

“The problem with skipping meals is that you will be low on energy and more likely to suffer from postnatal depression. It would be very beneficial to plan ahead before the birth and stock the freezer with ready-made nutritious meals that are easy to heat up with little preparatio­n.”
