• ¼ cup vinegar

Pour one cup of borax into the toilet before going to bed. In the morning, scrub and flush. For an extra-strength cleaner, add vinegar to the borax.

DRAIN CLEANER

• ½ cup baking soda

• 1 cup vinegar

• hot water

Prevent clogged drains by using hair and food traps available from most hardware stores. For bath and basin drains, pour baking soda down the drain, followed by vinegar. Leave it to bubble for 15 minutes, and rinse with hot water. You may have to repeat the process several times or leave the baking soda and vinegar to work overnight.

BATH AND TILE CLEANER

• 1¾ cup baking soda

• ½ cup liquid soap

• ½ cup water

• 2T vinegar

Mix the baking soda, liquid soap and water. Add the vinegar only after the others have been mixed. Apply, scrub and wipe.

ROOM FRESHENER

• 1t vinegar or lemon juice

• 1t baking soda

• 2 cups hot water

Both vinegar and baking soda work well for room fresheners. While vinegar deodorises, baking soda absorbs odours. Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle to create a roomfreshener spritz.
