THE BASICS
■ KNOW YOURSELF You have trigger points that cause you to lose control or lose your nerve. Identify them. You need to counteract these and be prepared to handle them when they occur. Remember, it is good to show emotion in front of your child if it is appropriate, but not when it is overwhelming and out of control. You need to remain the adult and provide your child with a sense that emotions are real for you but not something he needs to protect you from. You are capable of managing them.
■ KNOW YOUR CHILD
Think about how your child absorbs information the most, whether it be through pictures, storytelling, talking with you or doing things. Use this medium to share the news. For example, draw a picture of the family as you discuss them, and show the person who has died waving goodbye with a smile on their face as they walk out the door.
