SCREENING SENSE

Here’s a question we can’t answer: It’s easy to screen for cervical cancer, treat it and prevent it. So why is it the cancer that most SA women die from?

“Most of us don’t know that routine checks such as pap smears or human papillomavirus (HPV) tests, which screen for cervical cancer, can pick up early abnormal changes on the cervix before cancer develops. That’s why it’s key not to miss out on your routine check-ups,” says Dr Noluthando Nematswerani, head of Discovery’s Centre for Clinical Excellence. Consider yourself informed now. If you’re older than 25, you should have a pap smear every three years and HPV screening every five years. If you’re at high risk of developing cervical cancer (if you’re living with HIV or had a previous abnormal screening test result), you should have a pap smear every year and HPV screening every three years.

In short, screening tests save lives, so make that appointment now.
