FEELING ALONE?

-

Although nothing can replace the support of a mother, there are some ways to alleviate the loneliness of being a new mother without a mum.

■ JOIN A SUPPORT GROUP Most maternity wards can put you in touch with support groups for mothers dealing with breastfeeding issues or anxiety and depression. It helps to know you’re not the only one facing the challenges of new motherhood.

■ A LITTLE HELP FROM YOUR FRIENDS New mothers often feel they have to do everything themselves, and this can be very isolating. Most people are only too delighted to help, so if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, ask! You’ll be amazed at the outpouring of love you’ll get from friends and relatives.

■ GET HELP If you are overwhelmed with sadness and an inability to cope, it’s very important to get help. Postnatal depression can be debilitating for many months or even years, so it’s best to address it as quickly as possible.

Speak to your GP, gynae or therapist, or visit pndsa.org.za for resources that can help.
