TIPS TO MOTIVATE
“If your child feels that he is being dumped in a playroom so that the adults can get up to more interesting activities, the motivation for independent play will end immediately. Rather ease him into it over a period of time,” Marie-Jeanne says. Here are her suggestions:
■ Start by playing with him and modelling play behaviour enthusiastically.
■ Leave him alone for a few minutes and then return. Repeat this exercise, gradually extending the time he spends playing alone.
■ If he’s apprehensive of being left alone, tell him where you’re going. Something like: “I’m just going to check on dinner quickly,” should work well
■ If you aren’t within earshot, leave a monitor on so you can listen in.
■ Praise him when you return: “I’m so proud of you for being such a big boy that you can play all by yourself!”
