Rain eventually floors intrepid MTB riders
RIDERS participating in the 2017 uBhejane Xtreme on Saturday raised R380 000 towards Project Rhino and their efforts to stop rhino poaching in KZN.
They had a gruelling day in the saddle, but most were disappointed when the final 35km from the Centenary Centre to Hilltop Resort was cancelled.
A thunderstorm, with driving rain, broke just as the riders were preparing to start the final leg.
The ‘voice of cycling’ Phil Liggett, who travelled to iMfolozi Game Reserve to lead the final 35km Orphan, did not get a ride, but was full of praise for those who had completed their respective distances.
The ride lived up to its ‘extreme’ tag line as riders battled head winds and heat on the 340km Long Horn, the 240km Short Horn and 100km Baby Horn.
‘The heat and the headwind just makes you appreciate the cause so much more,’ said adventure mountain biker Jeannie Dreyer at the finish of her 340km epic.
