Girl power rules at Empangeni

- Orrin Singh

GIRL power was the order of the day on Friday morning when anxious Empangeni High School learners received their matric results.

Three pupils, all girls, stood out above the rest, achieving a combined total of 22 distinctions.

Mareli Swart earned eight distinctions, making her not only the overall top achiever at EHS, but also within the King Cetshwayo District.

Dhaenolia Govender, who plans on studying medicine in Pretoria, achieved seven distinctions.

She told the ZO that prayer and staying focused kept her on track for the final matric examinations.

‘I had the dream of one day achieving my goal of becoming a doctor. I think that pushed me to remain focused and my family also played a crucial role in being my support structure during exams.’

While Dhaenolia admitted she found mathematics the hardest during the finals, she was still able to achieve a distinction in the subject and said next year’s matriculants should lever lose focus.

‘Never doubt yourself. Reach for the stars because you’ll never know where you are going to end up,’ she told the ZO.

Mtunzini’s Itha Kotzé also achieve seven distinctions and told the ZO she too, plans on studying medicine this year and has been accepted at the University of the Witwatersrand in

Johannesburg.
