Zululand Observer - Monday

Police must serve and protect us

-

Iwrite in response to the article ‘Community pleads for police station’ in the ZO of last week. live in Mzingazi and can confirm that crime here is completely out of control - and getting worse.

It is so bad that even the police withdrew the satellite station here because ‘it was not safe for their members’.

For goodness sake, how do you think we feel?

The police are supposed to ‘protect and serve’ the people of South Africa.

The very people that we are supposed to rely on are not prepared to help us because they feel unsafe!

We live in constant fear for our lives and I don’t think there is a single person here who has not been affected by the crime in the area.

How often do we have to ask and complain, never mind protest, to get our message across.

And then the cluster spokesperson, Captain Mdlalose, in all his wisdom says the ‘leaders of the community must try to meet with the Provincial Commissioner and Department of Safety and Liaison over this issue’.

How does he propose we do this? We are a poor community, where must we get the money to go and ‘meet’ with these people, whoever they are and wherever they may be?

Captain Mdlalose’s response just shows how out of touch the SAPS and the powers that be are regarding the dangerous conditions we have to live in.

We desperately need a satellite station here in Mzingazi.
