Illegal dumping justly causes public concern
THE problem of illegal dumping continues to prevail in Brackenham despite efforts by the City of uMhlathuze to erect skips within the suburb.
According to Ward 26 Councillor Leslie Joseph, the skips were placed near the community halls in Aquadene and Brackenham to curb illegal dumping, but residents refuse to use them.
‘We have had continuous problems with garden refuse, building rubble and household rubbish being dumped in parks, vacant plots and near the greenbelt areas.
‘It is unacceptable because the municipality has assisted the community by putting skips in the residential areas, but residents just do not use them.
‘In the past we removed the skips because people were too lazy to throw the rubbish into the collection bins and instead left the garbage on the ground next to them.
‘We brought them back because not all residents were abusing the facility and there was still a need for them.
‘We have also caught businesses dumping their waste next to the skips and instructed them to remove it and take it to the dump site.
‘These skips are here to benefit the community and we want people to stop dumping around the township.
‘In some streets, refuse is being left at the entrances to and on the vacant plots and this is such an eyesore to see,’ said Joseph.
Last week, the City of uMhlathuze staff, assisted by Councillor Sandra Naidoo cleared up the refuse, which was dumped next to the skip area.
An appeal has been made to the community to keep the suburbs clean and refrain from littering.
