Rain damages Temple

Zululand Observer - Monday - - EASTERN WATCH - Conelia Harry

THE Richards Bay Sri Mariammen Temple ceiling collapsed after heavy rains recently, causing extensive damage to the facility.

Brackenham pensioner Lilly Pillay said this was again another setback at the temple premises in Lobotium street when the rain got through the roof and damaged the ceiling boards and they collapsed.

Pillay has worked over 30 years to erect buildings at the Richards Bay Sri Mariammen Temple, with the help of community donors and sponsors, and she has no funds available to repair the damages.

‘This is the fourth time the ceiling has been damaged and we are once again appealing to the public for support.

‘The temples are for the community and I am hoping members will come forward to assist me, as I am very old now.

‘We have worked hard over the years to build two temples on the site and we need the community’s support to maintain them.

‘Our electrical system was also damaged and the facility is without power as well.

‘There are special prayers coming up soon and we are hoping to have all these repairs completed,’ said Pillay.

She relies on donations for the upkeep of the facility.
