Warm water temperatures bring in good catches

- Richard Springorum

WARM water temperatures along the north coast have resulted in a number of nonedible and edible species, which provided anglers with a number of fights.

Great news for fishermen is that the sardines are starting to make their way up the coastline and will be on Zululand’s doorstep in the near future.

A quick tip before we dive into the reports over the last week is to use circle hooks.

The design of this specific hook reduces hookups on the rocks.

Owing to the hook facing inward, the hooks simply bounce off the rocks, whereas the same size J-hook would see itself hooked solidly into the rocks.

This results in rigging new traces and can prove costly and frustrating at the same time.

Off-shore anglers working the Jex Estate area have been rewarded with good sized couta and snoek.

These fish could not resist trolled mackerel and fillet baits.

Rock and surf anglers have literally had to pay a price to catch fish.

With the recent petrol increase and the fish only biting at Cape Vidal and Sodwana, landing a fish has proved quite costly.

Stumpnose, speckled snapper and cat face rock cods have been the main species landed in the far north region.

These fish are currently feeding around rocky areas, therefore make sure to use circle hooks to maximise hookups and reduce tackle loss.
