ICASA brings education campaign to Zululand
THE Independent Communications
Authority of South Africa (ICASA) commemorated Youth Month by bringing its national consumer education campaign to the Empangeni and eSikhaleni communities last week.
The campaign provided local youth with information that will help them make informed choices about their consumption of electronic communications services, in particular the use of smartphones, to access and utilise data services.
The national consumer campaign aims to deliver on ICASA’s mandate, which requires it to educate consumers on their rights and responsibilities, as well as protecting consumers against harmful business practices.
‘ICASA has been holding hearings on the review of one of the pro-consumer regulations around data services, and furthermore announced the finalisation of the
End User and Subscriber Service Charter regulations,’ said ICASA Councillor, Nomonde Gongxeka-Seopa.
‘The regulations seek to develop minimum standards in respect of the provision of data, SMS and voice services.
‘We want young citizens to know their rights when it comes to data services and that they can preserve their data by rolling it over or transferring it to an immediate family member on the same network.
‘As we regulate in the public interest, we commit ourselves to ensuring that their needs are taken into account by our licensees,’ said Gongxeka-Seopa.
