Brazil still favourites to take soccer crown

- Richard Springorum

THE weekend provided soccer fans all over the world with mixed emotions when their favourite teams locked horns in the Round of 16, resulting in the end of the World Cup road for some teams, with others still in the running for World Cup glory.

Brazil who have entered the competition as favourites to take their sixth crown, will come up against a well drilled Mexican side on Monday at 4pm.

The Mexicans dismissed Germany 2-1 in the pool stages and were a major player in the demise of the defending champion’s campaign.

But head-to-head Brazil has won 23, drawn seven and lost ten, which will give the squad confidence heading into the match.

With a star-studded team the Brazilians will back their quick attacking play and slick short passes to nudge out the Mexicans.

Neymar who has only bagged one goal for Brazil, will need to step up and live up to his standards if he wants his side to win the entire tournament.

Another exciting clash is between Sweden and Switzerland who lock horns on Tuesday at 4pm.

The Swiss have won 10, drawn seven and lost 10 against the Swedes and will look to utilise their form to progress to the quarter-final stages on the grand stage.

ZO Soccer Shoot-Out Competition

Do not forget that there are fantastic prizes up for grabs in the ZO Soccer Shoot-out competition, which runs for the duration of the Soccer World Cup.

All you need to do is collect a total of eight soccer player profile cards, printed in the Zululand Observer until 9 July.

These player cards must be cut out and pasted on the back page of the Football Face-off 2018 pull-out feature.

Once your collection is complete, WhatsApp us a photo of the entire collection with your full name to 072 0694169 before 10 July.

Five lucky readers will then be drawn to go through to the ZO Penalty Shoot-out on 13 July, with a chance to strike and win.

The five finalists will be required to bring in the original Football Face-off feature with the pasted profile cards.

The ZO will be running a series of videos and blog posts by our soccer fundi and ZO Editor Dave Savides, called Dave’s

Dribble, for the duration of the World Cup.

These can be viewed online at www.zululandobserver.co.za.

One can also stream every game live via the ZO website by clicking on the play button or Play Now icon and download full fixture list on our website.
