District launches R60-million water project
THE King Cetshwayo District Municipality (KCDM) on Tuesday launched a R60million water project in Mthonjaneni.
The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of next year, is part of the district’s plan to fast track the provision of water to rural areas.
It covers wards 5 and
6 in the Mthonjaneni Municipality and involves the construction of pipelines, reservoirs and a pump station.
Addressing the community at Mfanefile hall, District Mayor Nonhle Mkhulisi said the project will provide water to the communities of Mfanefile, Langwe, Ezingwenya and Ekuthuleni.
‘Lives will be changed for the better by the end of 2019 when water will flow while the transfer of skills will enable local labourers to be trained for future job prospects.
‘As part of developing emerging companies within KCDM, the main contractor will be transferring skills on contract management, construction site management skills and plumbing skills.
‘The project will be implemented using labour intensive construction methods in line with Expanded Public Works Programme principles.
‘Local labour will be sourced through an established Project Steering Committee (PSC).
‘The PSC will be made up of members from ward 5 and 6 sub-wards,’ Mkhulisi said.
