Explorer Kingsley back on the road again
ADVENTURER supreme, Kingsley Holgate passed through Richards Bay on Wednesday where he launched his fifth book, ‘Africa – A Love Affair with a Continent’.
The book covers the 30 years of Kingsley’s daunting travels to every country in Africa, including all island states.
Hosted at the Country Club by Land Rover Empangeni, Kingsley once again held his audience spellbound, recounting hair-raising incidents from his past exploits as he took on the most challenging terrains in aid of causes ranging from rhinos to malaria, eyesight and water filters.
The Bay stopover was one of his last in South Africa before embarking on yet another world-first humanitarian and geographic expedition, this time from Cape Town to Kathmandu.
This is the first expedition for the team in a new adventure theme of ‘Africa and Beyond’.
Covering 19 countries and 17 000km, the expedition will travel through Africa to the edge of the European world and then to ancient Asia and the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal in the shadow of the world’s highest mountain, Mt Everest.
This new Land Rover journey follows in the footsteps of Marco Polo along a branch of the ancient Silk Route, from Turkey through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and India.
Two specially-kitted expedition Land Rover Discoveries, which proved they can handle the toughest terrain on the recent Extreme East expedition to Somalia and the most easterly point of Africa, will be used for the journey.
This will be the first time the Land Rover All New Discovery undertakes a trans-continental journey through Africa, the South Caucasus region, Central and Southern Asia.
