Po­lice­man ar­rested for rhino poach­ing

A PO­LICE of­fi­cer is ex­pected to ap­pear in the Ng­welezana Mag­is­trate’s Court this morn­ing (Mon­day) on charges of rhino poach­ing. Ac­cord­ing to King Cetshwayo Clus­ter Po­lice spokesper­son, Cap­tain Mbon­geni Md­lalose, the 36-year-old of­fi­cer, a mem­ber of the KwaMsane Tac­ti­cal Re­sponse Team, was ar­rested on Thurs­day af­ter­noon. ‘The of­fi­cer was ar­rested in the iM­folozi Game Re­serve by mem­bers of Rhino 9 after his ve­hi­cle was searched and two rhino horns and an un­li­censed firearm and am­mu­ni­tion were found.’ Md­lalose said the of­fi­cer was not in po­lice uni­form at the time of his ar­rest. ‘He was taken to Ntam­banana po­lice sta­tion where he was de­tained.

The rhino horns will be handed over to the Stock Theft Unit for safe­keep­ing.’ Ac­cord­ing to a source, the of­fi­cer did not work alone. In an­other case, KwaMsane po­lice ap­pre­hended three sus­pects in pos­ses­sion of rhino horn, an un­li­censed ri­fle and four rounds of am­mu­ni­tion at Nkolokotho Re­serve in the KwaMsane area on Wed­nes­day at about 9pm.
