Policeman arrested for rhino poaching
A POLICE officer is expected to appear in the Ngwelezana Magistrate’s Court this morning (Monday) on charges of rhino poaching. According to King Cetshwayo Cluster Police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, the 36-year-old officer, a member of the KwaMsane Tactical Response Team, was arrested on Thursday afternoon. ‘The officer was arrested in the iMfolozi Game Reserve by members of Rhino 9 after his vehicle was searched and two rhino horns and an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found.’ Mdlalose said the officer was not in police uniform at the time of his arrest. ‘He was taken to Ntambanana police station where he was detained.
The rhino horns will be handed over to the Stock Theft Unit for safekeeping.’ According to a source, the officer did not work alone. In another case, KwaMsane police apprehended three suspects in possession of rhino horn, an unlicensed rifle and four rounds of ammunition at Nkolokotho Reserve in the KwaMsane area on Wednesday at about 9pm.
