PHINDILE Mthethwa had a sleepless night last Wednesday, after her sixmonths-old baby boy, Mpendulo was taken away by her friend. The 21-year-old woman from Mevamhlophe Reserve outside Empangeni has urged other young mothers not to trust anyone with their babies. ‘I thank God to be reunited with my baby boy,’ she said. Mthethwa said her ordeal started when she went to Empangeni Clinic for her own medical check-up. She was accompanied by her friend who intended to withdraw some cash in town. ‘She is our neighbour, and friend. We took the same taxi together, and when we arrived in town, she went to withdraw her money. ‘I did not expect anything. She offered to carry my baby for me and I agreed because my son is too heavy. ‘I gave her some money to buy me food. We agreed to meet at Empangeni Clinic, but that did not happen. ‘It was the last time to see them both on that day. ‘We then started searching with the police on Wednesday night. We waited the entire night and on Thursday morning, my brother managed to trace her boyfriend who was adamant that the child was his girlfriend’s, because she had been pregnant. ‘As we continued searching for her, she called us and said we must fetch the baby in town. ‘I and my two sisters and brother went to collect the baby and handed her over to the police,’ said Mthethwa. King Cetshwayo Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said a suspect aged 23 was arrested for child stealing. She was expected to appear at Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
