Colleague arrested for prof’s murder

- Orrin Singh

A UNIVERSITY of Zululand (Unizulu) employee and an alleged hired hit-man will appear in the Empangeni Magistrates Court this morning in connection with the murder of Unizulu Professor, Gregory Kamwendo (53). This after Empangeni detectives made a breakthrough in the case which saw Kamwendo, who was the Dean of the Department of Faculty of Arts at Unizulu, murdered in cold blood in May this year. The ZO broke the story of the brutal murder of Kamwendo who had driven into his complex (Durnford Heights, Empangeni) parked in his parking bay and was still inside his gold Toyota Yaris when a lone gunman approached the vehicle and fired four shots through the driver’s side window, all of which pierced the chest of the Malawian national. Laptops and cellphones, recovered from Kamwendo’s vehicle, had been sent for analysis. According to King Cetshwayo Cluster Police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, the arrests were made on Thursday. ‘A female Unizulu employee was arrested in the Empangeni vicinity while the hit-man was traced to Dundee and arrested there,’ said Mdlalose. Both suspects, who were detained over the weekend, are facing charges of murder. Kamwendo’s murder sent shock waves through the residents of Durnford Heights, many of whom spoke anonymously to the ZO at the scene of his murder. Professor Kamwendo served Unizulu from 2016, following his tenure as the Dean of the College of Education at the University of KwaZuluNatal. He was described to the ZO as a ‘knowledge fountain’ by Unizulu.
