EFF demands free swimming at Mtuzini beach

- Muzi Zincume

POLITICAL parties in the King Cetshwayo District have demanded that residents should not be charged for when entering the Ezemvelo Wildlife beach area at Mtunzini. EFF members accompanied by ANC and IFP members made the claim during their protest march on Friday last week, when they handed over their memorandum to Ezemvelo KZN Wildife Acting Regional Manager, Cedric Coetzee. The protest convener, Simphiwe Ndlela, said since the beach is a non-reclaimable property Ezemvelo Wildlife should allow residents to use it for free. ‘As from tomorrow (Saturday), residents will be swimming for free. Many of our community members do not have any source of income, but they are being charged R30, if they want to swim. ‘As the EFF we have decided to take action for the sake of the community. It came to our conscience that their rights are being violated in thousands of ways,’ said Ndlela. Ndlela further demanded street lights be installed to prevent mugging and robbery incidents happening in the area. ‘We demand the roads leading to the beach be upgraded, to accommodate pedestrians and to prevent congestion during the festive holidays. ‘We further demand recreational areas for children, such as jumping castles, jungle gym, braai stands and shelters to accommodate beach-goers when it is raining,’ he said. They gave Ezmvelo KZN Wildlife seven days to respond to their grievances but made it clear that as from Saturday the community will be swimming for free.
