Lucky to be alive

The traffic light turned red and all the cars came to a stop, when this car came out of nowhere

A FEMALE Richards Bay jogger is lucky to be alive after being flung several metres into the air after she was struck by a car in Meerensee on Thursday morning.

The accident, which took place at an Angler’s Rod traffic light intersection, was reportedly the result of the vehicle skipping the red lights.

Sophia Mostert (50), who was running alongside her husband Marius – who narrowly escaped the impact – was, according to onlookers who witnessed the peak hour school traffic incident, ‘tossed up higher than the top of the robots’.

Unconfirmed reports said the car had been escorting a cash-in-transit vehicle.

Speaking to the ZO on Friday while still in ICU at Melomed Hospital, Sophia said she feared she might not be able to fully enjoy her life for a while after the accident.

She suffered injuries to her back and neck, and multiple bruises to her body.

‘I was jogging at around 7am with my husband, which is what we usually do every morning to keep active.

‘The traffic light turned red and all the cars came to a stop. We then proceeded to cross the intersection when this car came out of nowhere.

‘I was flung into the air but luckily did not sustain any internal injuries.’

The housewife said that her goal of taking part in a mini-marathon in four weeks would now not be realised. ‘I take classes at the gym daily and jogging is one of my hobbies to keep me fit and healthy.

‘At this point, I am happy to be alive and I am so glad that my husband was not injured. He just missed being struck.’

During a community meeting last week, the uMhlathuze development team touched on long-term plans which would see sidewalks and pedestrian crossings extended to accommodate joggers and cyclists.
