Uniforms for Mandeni learners
TWO-HUNDRED learners from disadvantaged backgrounds at schools in Mandeni beamed from ear to ear recently after receiving new school uniforms from Ithala Development Finance Corporation (IDFC).
‘Our visit to Gcwalamoya Primary School and Dendethu Primary School is part of Ithala’s Abantwanabethu or
‘Our Children’ campaign, which aims to promote a positive learning environment for learners in remote areas of KwaZuluNatal through sponsorship of essential school supplies such as school uniforms’, said Andile Mabaso, IDFC Group Corporate Social Investment Coordinator.
The uniforms included tunics, trousers, shirts, socks, shoes and jerseys.
Mabaso says, ‘In identifying the two schools and the learners we worked closely with the Mathonsi Traditional Council because traditional leaders are an integral part of these communities.’
Inkosi Simphiwe Mathonsi and members of the Mathonsi Traditional Council attended the handover at both primary schools.
He told learners and members of the schools’ governing bodies that the traditional council had asked Ithala to assist the Mathonsi community and they had responded positively.
He said they are all very happy and the learners thanked Ithala in song and poetry.
The Abantwanabethu campaign also includes the Starsaver Financial Programme.
Ithala volunteers impressed on the 200 Grade 5 to 7 learners the importance of saving and banking which is vital to secure their future financial success.
‘As Ithala was one of the first and biggest organisations to support business and individuals in rural KwaZulu-Natal we care about the well-being of the community and especially the children.
‘The future of the country is in the hands of our children and grandchildren, therefore one of our priorities should be nurturing and education.’
It has been shown in other countries that, by providing uniforms to underprivileged learners, there has been a substantial reduction in absenteeism and an improvement in academic results.
