Modern turbo engine finally introduced for Eclipse Cross

-

Autodealer recently reported on Mitsubishi SA’s plans to introduce a turbo variant to its Eclipse Cross range.

Well, the brand has done it and the new downsized version of the Japanese automaker’s latest SUV is now available locally.

The Eclipse Cross 1.5T only comes in front-wheel-drive format and is priced at R459 995.

The 1.5-litre direct injection turbo-petrol engine has the same 110kW power output as the 2.0-litre normally aspirated motor found in other derivatives, but there is significantly more torque (250Nm versus 198Nm).

As you’d expect, the 1.5T is quite a bit faster off the mark, with Mitsubishi claiming a 0-100km/h sprint time of just under nine seconds, versus 12.1 seconds for the normally aspirated model.

Like the 2.0, the 1.5T is paired with a CVT continuously variable transmission with eight steps built in to emulate the feel of an automatic gearbox.

The Eclipse Cross 1.5T has the same exterior styling package as the 2.0, with 18-inch alloys fitted as standard, and the interior is mostly carried over too, with the exception of new carbon fibre door inserts that distinguish the flagship model.

There is no grade walk in the Eclipse Cross range, as all models come fully loaded.

Standard features include head-up display, automatic climate control, multi-function steering wheel with gear-shift paddles, cruise control, leather seats (heated up front and electrically adjustable for the driver), LED headlights, front and rear park distance control and reverse camera.

Also included is a five-year/ 90 000km service plan and threeyear/100 000km warranty.
