Red Beast works feverishly to steamroller virus hurdle
DISAPPOINTED about the postponement of his 5 April SA title assignment because of the coronavirus, Zululand heavyweight bomber Joshua ‘Red Beast’ Pretorius will not be retreating into isolation and slow down on his rigorous training regime until a new fight date is announced.
The Tono Promotions ‘Coastal Sting’ slug fest scheduled for the Umfolozi Casino Resort next month was postponed following government restrictions on major public events
While the camp will follow all preventative protocols as part of the national campaign to curb the spread of Covid-19, it will be business as usual as there will be no let-up in putting in the hard yards to maintain his fitness levels.
Pretorius aims to remain in near peak form at all times so he will be ready to rumble the moment the fight against Luke Sutherland is back on.
It will require an adjustment to his training programme though.
He followed a carefully designed build-up routine over the past few months, working towards fine-tuning his preparations and hitting his peak just at the right time, but obviously this aspect will be toned down for now.
‘We were in the last stages of wrapping things up and were confident about Josh’s improvement in technique and power,’ said coach Corrie Pretorius.
‘So, from that point of view the postponement came as a disappointment as we will lose some momentum, but we understand the need to contribute to the coronavirus initiatives.
‘The opposition camp no doubt faces the same predicament, so we’ll just regroup and focus on keeping Josh firing until the fight takes place.’
All boxing tournaments in South Africa are affected and those planned for March and April have been postponed.
