- Erica Abrahams

THE mother and child among the 16 passengers involved in a taxi crash on the N2 last week, are still recovering in hospital from their extensive injuries.

Last Tuesday, the taxi they were travelling in lost control after the side shaft of the vehicle apparently snapped.

Eight other passengers sustained moderate injuries

The three-year-old and his 39-year-old mother from eSikhaweni are still being treated at Ngwelezana Hospital where they were rushed to.

The child’s aunt, who was also travelling in the taxi at the time of the accident, told the ZO this week that doctors considered amputating the three-year old’s arm, but it appears as if this is no longer necessary.

He is now recovering and adjusting to a skin graft operation.

The toddler also suffered a head injury.

‘The boy had skin taken from his thigh and placed on his arm and we are now hoping that he heals properly. We hope he will be discharged next week,’ said his aunt.

She added that the child’s mother is in a stable condition.

Paramedics said the woman suffered from major internal injuries, mainly in the abdomen.
