INSPIRED to ‘bake’ the world a better place, Richards Bay’s

Storm Meintjies recently created 1 350 cupcakes for a Child Protection Week fund-raising campaign hosted by Richards

Bay Family Care (RBFC).

The 31-year-old entrepreneur and owner of The Stormy Kitchen, was one of many businesses owners who had to close their doors during the lockdown, but she decided to channel her energy into charity work by joining RBFC’s Cupcakes for Kids initiative. The campaign aimed to create awareness on children’s rights and the cupcakes were sold to raise funds for the projects. During the lockdown, Storm also posted recipe videos on social media, and with the community on board, supporters made donations which were handed over to Richards Bay Family Care and another charity, Walk in Faith. ‘I joined Cupcakes for Kids last year and it was a great success.

Amid the Covid-19 fears, we persevered and even beat last year’s record by 200 cupcakes.

‘I did the baking, others promoted sales and the RBFC team made the deliveries around Richards Bay and Empangeni,’ she said.

As a self-taught baker, Storm grew up watching her parents work their magic in the kitchen, but it was only after baking her youngest daughter’s birthday cake two years ago that the baking bug grabbed hold.

Tuning in to hundreds of videos on YouTube, she began mastering her baking skills and opened her business in December.

Her future goals is to start an initiative to make sure that no child in our community ever goes without a birthday cake.

‘There is always cause to celebrate. I graduated from the school of life, taught myself and started following my dream at 29. One can achieve anything you want through hard work and dedication.

‘I have a passion for helping the less fortunate. My mom was raised in an orphanage and that inspired me to work hard to make a difference during Child Protection Week through the Cupcakes for Kids event.’
