Nissan reveals next generation X-Trail

- Val van der Walt

NISSAN in the USA has revealed the next generation X-Trail, and with this SUV being one of the brand’s key products here in SA, it’s an important reveal for us too.

While Nissan SA has yet to say when the new X-Trail can be expected on local soil, Autodealer expects that when it eventually arrives, it will not differ much from the US version as far as looks are concerned.

Called the Nissan Rogue by the Yanks, the next generation X-Trail features the brand’s latest design elements, including a floating roof and a fresh interpretation of the ‘V-motion’ grille.

It also gains a new split-level lighting arrangement up front as well as an active grille shutter to control airflow into the engine bay.

Interestingly, Nissan says the body measures some 38mm shorter than the outgoing model.

Furthermore, the new car gains revised electric power steering (with a quick gear ratio), along with a new multi-link suspension set-up at the rear.

Front-driven variants feature three drive modes, while all-wheel drive models boast five modes.

Inside, there are new ‘NASAinspired zero gravity’ low-fatigue spinal support seats, as well as three-zone climate control.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless smartphone charging are on the cards, as are a fullcolour 10.8-inch head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital cluster (or 7.0inch on lower spec models) and a 9.0-inch touchscreen display.

In the USA, the next Rogue will be offered exclusively with a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre fourcylinder petrol unit with 135kW (up from the 126kW offered in the X-Trail here in SA), and 245Nm (up from 233Nm).

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) will do the shifting.
