Taking a leap to promote uMlalazi tourism operators

- Larry Bentley

TO promote tourism in the uMlalazi municipal areas, a tourism strategy and development plan focusing on community tourism operators forming a ‘Destination Marketing Organisation’ has been approved by the municipality.

The plan was presented at the recent uMlalazi Tourism Association AGM held in Mtunzini.

The aim of the plan is to increase capacity of service providers and access development funding for tourism initiatives.

The committee resolved that proposals be invited from suitable service providers to obtain the necessary documentation so that the process can be initiated and undertaken on behalf of the association.

Requirements include registration as both a non-profit organisation with the Department of Welfare and with SARS as a public benefit organisation to benefit from tax exemption and be able to issue section 18A tax certificates.

Part of the process will be defining the scope of work and purpose of the Destination Marketing Organisation, including an organisational profile, policies, procedure manuals, (especially with regards to financial management) and guidelines for board oversight.

Also included will be a report outlining the planning, strategising and setting of priorities, focus areas and areas for self-generated income in consultation with the board of directors.

Appointment of auditors and a board of directors will also be required.

Persons or organisations wishing to participate in the process are invited to submit a quotation to the uMlalazi Tourism Association, for attention R Hulley, on email: hulleyronel38@gmail.com before 10am on Monday, 30 November.

Further information can also be obtained at the above email.
