Dirty Busted climbs the hip-hop ladder

- Wellington Makwakwa

Lyricist Siyanda Nxumalo, aka Dirty Busted, continues to climb the rap and hiphop ladder with his impressive verses and smooth transitions.

The rapper with a knack for eKasi smooth rhymes has already swept the region and other parts of KZN’s charts with his recent single, Kwasukasukela.

The track not only provides an insight into his life and rap journey, but also showcases a softer vocal delivery over clean melodic electronics and low-slung bass swells.

Born in the rural heart of Dondotha Reserve outside Empangeni, Dirty Busted was bitten by the entertainment bug at an early age while in primary school.

‘I started as a dancer and listened to music by Zola, which inspired me to also write.

‘While in primary school I started recording my material and already understood music,’ he said.

With kwaito music as his influence, he started infusing it with trap and hip-hop music, adding a dash of eKasi flavour to create a unique sound.

When he moved closer to Empangeni, the rap star joined forces with other hip-hop artists and created a group, Blank Ink.

The group not only released various materials such as their mixed tape titled Tears of Joy, but also ventured into business and used their stardom to create employment for others.

‘Because the group was big, we printed

T-shirts, hats and other material from which entrepreneurs benefitted,’ he said.

Last year he decided to venture on a personal project and has already recorded more than 30 tracks, with some part of his upcoming EP expected to be released soon.

He hopes to one day build a state-of-the-art studio which will assist upcoming artists record their music.
