Big catches made off the north coast

ANGLERS' questions about where to go for the best fishing this week were answered in the form of big catches over a variety of species in the north coast waters.

Deep sea anglers have congregated at uMdloti, Westbrook and uMhlanga for launches.

Anglers have cast straight into the thick of things early in the mornings, by working the shallows with a couple of fillet baits for snoek.

Both lipped lures and fillet baits have produced fish, with the fillets landing the bigger boys.

While venturing into the deeper water, troll lipped lures to the spot, before switching over to slower trolling of live and dead bait.

Lipped lures are used for the tuna, with an occasional surprise being hooked.

Complete the slower trolling around reefs and troll the baits at different depths to ensure you cover all the likely areas.

Rock and surf anglers have worked the north coast region over the past week, and have reaped reward with huge inedibles.

This area has always been the place to go to target the bigger fish of the skate or toothy kind.

There have been plenty of big sandies around the upper north coast.

To avoid disappointment, ensure the tackle used when targeting these brutes is up to standard.

Some fishermen who have been up for a real fight have swum the skates they have landed and as a result, have reeled in huge zambies.

These lads put in a fatiguing performance for the angler as they keep pulling throughout the fight.

Anglers working the ledges and sandbanks along the upper north coast region have enjoyed a mixed menu of options.

Stumpies, lemonfish, speckled snapper and various kingies are but a sample of the variety available.

Prawn, chokka and redeye sardines have been the bait of choice.

Use circle hooks in these rocky terrains, to avoid hooks from snagging in the abundant reef.
