No end in sight for leaking effluent

- Reece Reid

GARRICK Rise residents in Meerensee continue to struggle with the overwhelming stench of sewage despite repeatedly reporting the issue to the municipality.

One resident, Harm Steenkamp said the municipality had, once again, attempted to fix the broken manhole cover, however, this lasted three days before the pungent smell of effluent returned.

He said the more serious underlying issue is what was causing the manhole to break and leak, with no permanent solution seemingly sought by the municipality.

'I call and report the issue to the municipality twice a week, hoping someone will listen and investigate the matter further, as I am struggling to live like this,' said Steenkamp.

Municipal staff, who originally investigated, stated that the issue was due to 'cable theft affecting the sewerage pumps', but Steenkamp said this did not seem to be the cause of the persistent problem.

No comment was received from the municipality at the time of going to print, however, they have been made aware of the matter through previous news reports.
