Local stars in AFCON hockey win for SA

- Richard Springorum

AFTER playing a pivotal role in the SA men's indoor hockey team's victory at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, former Felixton College pupil Bongumusa Mngoma has his sights now set on making the World Cup squad.

Named Goalkeeper of the Tournament, the 18-year-old was one of the star players the SA team's 4-1 victory over Namibia in a hotly contested final.

This win cemented the SA squad's participation in the World Cup tournament in February next year in Belgium.

Bongumusa, a matric pupil at Westville Boys' High School, went from playing Pro Series U16 Panthers and 1st team hockey at school, to making the KZN Mynahs and then the SA men's squad.

After playing out of his socks and pushing hard at a training camp in Johannesburg, the talented youngster made the 12-man AFCON squad to represent South Africa at the Durban tournament.

He was thrown into the deep end when fellow goalkeeper Anton van Loggerenberg picked up an injury during the tournament.

The youngster stood up to the challenge and put in a number of incredible performances, which included an exceptional save in the final critical stage of the game against Namibia.
