Zulu King’s successor to throne is named

- Erica Abrahams

THE eldest son of the late Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has been designated to reign as King of the Zulu nation, with his first task being to restore unity in the Royal family and Zulu clan.

In her will which was read on Friday at the Khangelamankange Royal Palace in Nongoma, Regent Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu, who died suddenly last week, named her son Prince Misuzulu (46), as the successor to the throne.

The announcement of the appointment came amid a bitter family dispute and sparked disapproval from some senior royals.

Responding to the division within the family, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, traditional Prime Minister of the Zulu nation, told the media on Saturday that most senior ranking royals pledged their support to the new King.

Buthelezi said that according to the family, King Misuzulu had already taken the throne.

'The family appreciates this indication that stability and unity have been restored.

'On our side, the King is already on the throne because this is not the president; but of course, some formalities will be following from the government's side.'

Buthelezi said he had heard rumours that the late King Goodwill Zwelithini's will was to be contested in court.

He could not confirm if this affected the new King's appointment.

'They are quite free if they want to take the matter to court.

'I have definitely heard rumours that some members were looking for legal advice, but that is the work of the court, and I cannot say what will happen.'
