Urgent push to fill senior posts at KC District Municipality

- Gugu Myeni

KING Cetshwayo District Municipality (KCDM) must fill two vacant senior manager positions after the KZN executive council expressed concerns that they, and two other provincial municipalities, have vacant posts which are critical to operations.

The posts that need to be filled include Deputy Municipal Manager: Technical Services and Deputy Municipal Manager:

Corporate Services.

The provincial council has directed the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to engage noncomplying municipalities.

'In the event that no progress is realised within the stipulated time frame, Cogta will submit a progress report for the Executive Council to consider whether it is not necessary to invoke section 139 (1)(b) of the Constitution,' council said in a statement.

This means the provincial government would assume responsibility because the municipality would have failed to fulfil an obligation.

KCDM Municipal Manager, Mbali Ndlovu, said the municipality has begun the process of filling the posts.

'As mentioned in the budget presentation to council by His Worship, Mayor BL Phungula on 28 May, these positions have been regarded as critical and have been budgeted for,' said Ndlovu.

She said the position for Deputy Municipal Manager: Technical Services has been advertised in local and national print media.

'Applications were received in respect of this position and the process of shortlisting is currently under-way. Council also resolved to advertise the position of Deputy Municipal Manager: Corporate Services with the application closing date 14 June.'
