Pharmacy delivery man on road to recovery

- Erica Abrahams

CHRISTO Bester, the Alpha Pharm delivery man who suffered life-threatening injuries after an accident last week, is on the road to recovery after numerous surgeries.

His family on Saturday thanked the public for their prayers and said he was awake and talking, although still in much pain.

The single father, known to residents for his friendly nature, is in ICU after sustaining critical injuries when he was knocked off his motorbike last Tuesday.

The accident occurred at the corner of Turnbull Street and the R34 in Empangeni.

Christo's sister Laetitia Bester told the ZO that her brother was hit head-on 'and went flying into the air'.

His injuries were a hole in his lung and heart which resulted in the escape of air, and a torn kidney, which was bleeding heavily.

His femur, pelvis and ribs were also broken.

'The cardiothoracic surgeon has seen him, and he was taken to theatre on Thursday to fix his ribs. The orthopaedic surgeon has also attended to his femur.

'He again underwent surgery on Friday, during which he received four units of blood.

'His nurse said he is doing well now, and we are grateful to everyone for the prayers.

'The lung drainage pipe was removed. He is still not eating or drinking, only drips and tube feeding, and he says he's getting hungry now, which is a good sign,' said Laetitia.

She said she was heartbroken to see her brother so severely hurt, especially on the eve of his son's tenth birthday.

'He raises his child on his own, and this accident took place just a day before his son's birthday.

'I did take him out, but he would have loved to spend the day with his dad.

'Thank you for all the prayers, please continue.'
