Blood stock levels run low

- Conelia Harry

WITH blood stock levels countrywide still at an all time low, patients who rely on lifesaving donations remain at direct risk.

This is why the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is urging new and existing donors to visit their nearest blood donor centre as soon as possible to help boost the dwindling blood levels.

There is currently 2.9 days blood supply and SANBS needs group B+, AB- and O+ donors to donate.

The blood bank strives to have at least a five-day stock level on hand to sustain the country's need for blood.

Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre in the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre was open on Sunday as well to accommodate donors and encourages community members to take just 30 minutes out of their daily schedule to make a blood donation as they are open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday until 2pm.

With limited access to mobile blood drive venues due to Covid-19, and the closure of schools and universities, the blood service's ability to get the required 3500 blood donations a day is constrained.

In an attempt to increase blood stocks and continue saving lives, SANBS in KZN will operate on extended hours each day, allowing donors more time to make their donations throughout the day.

Donor centres are still adhering to strict Covid-19 infection prevention protocols to ensure the safety of both donors and staff members.

Blood is essential all year round and SANBS depends on regular donors to keep blood stocks at optimal levels to help meet the demand.
