Uniform donation welcomed at rural school
IT was a smart start to the year for
40 pupils from Inkosi Zenzo Primary School who received brand new uniforms through the South African Social Security Agency's (Sassa) Social Relief of Distress programme.
Situated in the rural Matshana area within kwaMadlebe Tribal Authority, Inkosi Zenzo caters to pupils from families who have been hardest hit by pandemic-related unemployment.
Principal Bongumusa Khanyile said the home life of many of these pupils was difficult, and families have welcomed the donation.
‘Most learners are living with their grandparents and some look after themselves. Sassa has played a very big role in assisting the needy learners in our school,’ he said.
He added that there are still many pupils in need of such 'good Samaritan' assistance.
‘We look forward to effective teaching and learning because our students now have confidence.’
‘As Sassa, it is our duty to monitor and assist children who are known to come from impoverished families,' said Sassa's Thubelihle Khumalo.
‘We have a duty to communicate with community leaders and school management regarding the learners' progress.
‘It is also the school’s responsibility to liaise with Sassa and select students who need assistance the most.’
Khumalo said this initiative has been running for as long as Sassa has been in existence, and will continue to do so where budgets permit.
Induna Makhathini under Inkosi Khulumangifile Zungu also thanked Sassa for the contribution.
‘We are indeed grateful on behalf of the community, for the school to receive such an amazing gift. Many of these children travel long distances to and from school, and this will definitely ease the burden on their families.
‘We also thank the Department of Education for such caring teachers who work at the school and request assistance for the less fortunate learners,’ said Makhathini.
