Calls for keen athletes to join squash club in Bay
COMMUNITY development and squash advancement at grassroots level were among the key areas of discussion when Veldenvlei Squash Club met on Tuesday to discuss plans for the 2022 season.
The club is shifting operations to suit the social needs of its members while at the same time accelerating the sport to increased heights to meet international standards and expectations.
Reagan Naidoo of the Veldenvlei Squash Club said that in the new season, young athletes will be given coaching and mentoring sessions, to prepare them to fly the SA flag high in the future.
‘We want to equip our club coaches with level 1 and 2 accreditation from Squash SA so we can prepare our athletes right from junior divisions to represent their country in the future.
‘With help from Zululand Squash Association and neighbouring squash clubs, our aim is to prepare teams to compete in provincial competitions,’ he said.
Club membership for the new season is now open, and Naidoo says interested members are encouraged to join.
‘A new and interesting programme is planned for the youth and juniors where coaching will be given every Saturday from 9am-11am at the Veldenvlei Squash Club.
'We urge all schools, youth and religious groups, as well as any residents interested, to register for the coaching clinics,' he said.
Naidoo added that schools and institutions are invited to submit proposals to use the club's three squash courts, so they are used to the fullest.
'Our club membership has dropped considerably owing to the Covid-related restrictions on movement, as well as their effect on the economy.
'We also welcome the public or businesses to assist us by providing equipment or financially assisting the club,’ he said.
Tournaments for first timers and social players will be scheduled throughout the season.
